Cafe Tiramisu

I had been hearing some great things about a new Cafe that just opened on 124 street and 107th  ave called Cafe Tiramisu. I was told it had a play area and a great atmosphere and I should check it out as it was a great “mom” hang out.  These were my expectations and I wasn’t disappointed.  However what I didn’t expect was to meet such an inspirational woman, who is the owner of Cafe Tiramisu, Seble Amelga.

Seble originates from Ethiopia but has been in Canada for many years. She has lived in other parts of Canada and Europe and her background is in restaurant management. As the mother of 3 girls she knows what it is like to feel excluded from places and how difficult and isolating it is to be a stay at home mom. Her intention in opening the Cafe was to have a gathering place that felt like home. A place where everyone was welcome , regardless of their family situation.  The play area is not the main attraction but an essential part of the puzzle that ensures families feel welcome. Seble says “When my kids were really little I wanted to go out and find a place to have a meal or enjoy some music. A place I could bring my kids to that was relaxing and comfortable. But there was no place that existed like this so I decided to create one”.

And create one she did! With European style counter service there are also big gorgeous tables to sit and relax or choose a comfy chair and read a book. The play area although small, has a glass area so you can enjoy your coffee and still keep an eye on your little ones and is equipped with  iPads for kids of all ages to enjoy.  When asked what she would do differently, she admits they had a bit of a rough start.” We weren’t ready for the overwhelming response we received. It was thrilling to see people lined out the door , however I know at the time we weren’t ready. Some people were confused by whether we are a sit down restaurant or a cafe with counter service. I think we are in the process of ironing out some of these bugs”.

Starting January 24th, the Cafe will have Yoga classes and child care available for $2 a child ( registration required ). You can also rent out the space for meetings and gatherings. Stay tuned for a  Modern Mama Mommy and Me Yoga event in the next couple of months.  Next time you are in the area stop by for one of their fabulous Tiramisu Lattes or enjoy the live music on Friday nights.
