Capital Ex: Fun for the Whole Family
Guest post by Sajida Pellegrini

It’s that time of year again!! The smell of popcorn and those little donuts make my mouth water; while the sound of buskers, roadies and carnies fill the air.  Nothing fills me more with nostalgia then the sights and sounds of Capital Ex.  I remember as a kid being so excited I could hardly sleep the night before. My brother and I had bunk beds and instead of sleeping (much to my parents dismay) we would discuss what our favorite rides were, what we would go on first and what food we would eat!!

I’m so excited to continue this local family tradition with my family.  My two girls are just as excited as I was at their age.  The excitement starts with the 88th Capital Ex parade on July 19th at 11 am! Early arrival is recommended and the pre–parade festivities start at 10 am. The LRT is probably your best option so you can avoid parking downtown.

What’s new at the Ex this year? Thrill seekers will love the addition of the new rollercoaster called the Nitro. The 335 meter track rollercoaster is massive and includes twists, hairpin turns and is sure to give you the thrills and chills you are looking for!

The theme of this year’s exhibition is music. Included in your admission and on the TELUS stage, enjoy tributes to Beatle mania and Elvis. Some of the headliners at the TELUS stage include the Matthew Good Band, Theory of a Deadman and Simple Plan.  Finish the night off at 11 pm with fireworks that are set to music.

Check out Family Fun Town, located in Hall C at the Edmonton EXPO centre from 12- 11 pm daily. There you will find children’s activities geared towards kids aged 3-12. The Farm is an interactive program that teaches kids about agriculture. There is also a construction zone, inflatable rain forest and story book lane. Family entertainer Fred Penner will be performing July 20th– July 24th. Your wee ones will enjoy meet and greets with their favorites including Caillou, Strawberry Shortcake, Thomas the Train and more!

The Capital Ex runs from July 20th –July 29th. Adult admission into the fair is $14 and $10 for ages 7- 12. Children under 6 are free!  New this year is the multi day “pumped up fun pass” (for all 10 days) for just $29.99.  For more information on the Capital Exhibition, visit www.capitalex.ca.
