What to Expect Book Series: Review & Giveaway!
I have been asked to review a few books from the whattoexpect.com book series AND give them away!
These books have been such great resources during my own adventures in pregnancy and motherhood that I am happy to oblige!
First up is What to Expect Before You’re Expecting.
I have to admit that I didn’t read ANY books about what to focus on before my first pregnancy…but this book seems to cover many of the important issues that could arise during that crucial “trying to conceive” period. It provides practical advice, tips and strategies on getting into tip-top baby-making shape, fertility-friendly eating, pinpointing ovulation (something I found to be quite difficult myself without one of those fancy digital monitors), and overcoming fertility bumps on the road to baby. If I’d had this book when I was trying to conceive, I would certainly have made use of Chapter 12 (Your Fertility Planner), which contains a Countdown to Conception 12-month calendar, a food diary, a health history chart, cycle tracking charts, and a fertility treatment planner – anything to make you feel like you’re more in control of the process!
Next up is the most well-known book in this series, What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
This book, which was recently turned into a movie, was the first book I received from a good friend when I found out I was pregnant the first time, and the only book that I constantly referred to throughout that pregnancy. While it covers topics from the planning stage right through to postpartum, the part I read and re-read on almost a daily basis was Part 2 (9 Months & Counting), which details your baby’s growth, what you may be feeling, what to expect at the doctor’s office, and what you may be wondering about in any particular week. With my first pregnancy I could certainly have told you what sized fruit the author had compared my baby to at any point in time! And the coverage of seemingly obscure or embarrassing topics, like constipation or tingling legs, helps to make you feel like your experience isn’t so unusual after all. A must-have resource for any mom-to-be!
Finally, let’s talk about What to Expect the First Year.
Although I had much less time on my hands for reading once each of my daughters was born, having this comprehensive “bible” for the first year of their lives was an amazing resource to have around the house whenever an issue arose. The first part covers issues like the great formula/breastfeeding debate, selecting a physician, and a baby care primer. Then, like the previous book, it tracks your baby’s first year month by month with sections on what your baby may be doing at that point, what you can expect at that month’s checkup, feeding your baby, what you may be concerned about and what it’s important to know at that moment. If you’re prone to worry about your baby’s development at various stages throughout his or her first year, this book is a great resource for double-checking that her or she is doing just fine!
